What this actually is

SHENXING Speed Talisman Tape is elastic kinesiology tape printed with the Chinese shen xing fu, the Taoist speed talisman. Each roll holds 20 pre-cut strips of 5 by 25 cm rayon with a hot-melt adhesive back, enough for five ritual applications. You tie it the way a runner ties a talisman: anchor, stretch, rub warm, go. It is worn for one effort and then retired.

It supports and marks. It does not promise you speed. The promise belongs to the legend, and the legend is the point.

How the talisman is tied

Four strips make one application: two down the calf, one across the ankle, one over the knee, or wherever the road hurts. Five applications to a roll. Do it slowly. Half the point is doing it slowly.

  1. 01

    Clean and dry

Skin must be dry and free of oil or lotion. Shave heavy hair if you want the strip to hold the full effort.

  2. 02

    Round the corners

Round each cut corner with scissors. Square corners are what catch on a sock and peel.

  3. 03

    Anchor with no stretch

Lay the first 3 cm flat with zero tension. The anchor is what holds; stretching it is the most common mistake.

  4. 04

    Stretch the middle

Hold the limb in its stretched position and lay the body of the strip at roughly half stretch. The last 3 cm go down flat again.

  5. 05

    Rub it warm

Rub along the strip with your palm until it warms. The adhesive is heat activated and will not hold until you do.

  6. 06

    Give it twenty minutes

Apply at least twenty minutes before you start, so the bond is set before the sweat is.

Do not apply over broken, irritated or infected skin. Remove it if the skin reacts. This is a tape and a talisman, not a medical device, and nothing here treats, prevents or diagnoses an injury.

Sub-20 5K, no coincidence

Ran my first sub-20 5K the morning after this arrived. Coincidence? Absolutely not. The ancient script does not miss.

Bought as a joke, now an heirloom

Bought it as a gag gift for my husband who is deep in marathon training. He laughed, then wore it for his long run, then quietly came home with a 12-minute PR. Now he treats it like a family heirloom. I have questions.

Fresh legs at mile 9

Wore this for a 10-mile trail run. Felt lighter the whole way and my legs were fresh at mile 9, which has literally never happened. I do not know what those red symbols say but they say it loudly.

Former skeptic, now believer

I have coached track for 19 years. I do not believe in talismans. My 800m girls bought these, and four of them PR'd in the same week. I now believe in talismans.

The yellow is bright and the red script looks genuinely cool in person. Three people at the gym asked where I got it before I even finished my warmup.

4.3 forty, nobody laughing

Told my buddies it is an ancient speed spell from a mountain temple. Half of them laughed. Then I dropped a 4.3 forty. Nobody laughed after that.

Ink painting of Dai Zong the Divine Traveller running with paper talismans tied to his legs

Where the mark comes from

The man who tied paper to his legs

拴两个甲马,日行五百里;拴四个甲马,日行八百里。 Water Margin, on Dai Zong the Divine Traveller

Dai Zong is the messenger of the Water Margin outlaws, remembered for a single trick. He ties jia ma — small talisman papers, the paper horses — to his calves, recites the charm, and covers ground no walking man should cover. Two papers carry him five hundred li. Four carry him eight hundred.

The paper horse is real folk practice. For centuries Chinese travellers, porters and pilgrims carried block-printed talismans for the road, and Taoist priests drew the shen xing fu, the speed talisman, in cinnabar by hand. Our tape carries that same brushwork, at the same place on the same legs.

五百里 Two papers. Five hundred li in a day — the bundle of three rolls carries the same name.

八百里 Four papers. Eight hundred li in a day — the bundle of six.

甲马 Jia ma, the paper horse. The talisman you tie on before you set out.

神行符 Shen xing fu, the divine-travel talisman. The mark printed down every strip.

Answers

What people ask before they tie one on

Plain answers. If yours is not here, write to us and we will add it.

What is a shen xing fu?

A fu is a written Taoist talisman: a character-like drawing a priest brushes in cinnabar on yellow paper, then charges with a command. The shen xing fu, the divine-travel talisman, is the one given to people with a long road ahead. It is the drawing printed on every strip in this roll.

Does it actually make me faster?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. This is elastic support tape with a talisman printed on it. It holds a muscle the way any kinesiology tape holds a muscle, and it carries a thousand-year-old drawing that means go far. What it does to your race is what any ritual does to any effort: it settles you before the start. The speed is still yours.

What is it made of?

Woven rayon with a hot-melt acrylic adhesive backing, printed with the fu in cinnabar on marigold. Latex free. Each roll is 5 m long and comes pre-cut into 20 strips of 5 by 25 cm.

How many strips do I need?

Four strips make one application — two down the calf, one across the ankle, one over the knee, or wherever your road hurts. That is five applications to a roll.

How long do I wear it?

One effort. Tie it before the race or the long run, and retire it afterwards. It is not built to be worn for days, and the ritual only really works if you tie it fresh each time.

How do I make it stick?

Dry, oil-free skin. Anchor the first 3 cm with zero stretch, lay the middle at about half stretch with the limb stretched out, finish the last 3 cm flat. Then rub the whole strip with your palm until it warms — the adhesive is heat activated and will not hold until you do. Apply at least twenty minutes before you start.

Where does it ship from, and what does shipping cost?

Shipping is free worldwide, on every order. Parcels leave China within 24 hours. Asia-Pacific arrives in 7–10 days, Europe and North America in 7–15 days, everywhere else in 7–30 days.

Is this a medical product?

No. SHENXING tape is a support tape and a piece of Taoist folk art. It is not a medical device, it treats nothing, and it prevents nothing. Do not apply it over broken, irritated or infected skin, and take it off if your skin reacts. If something hurts, see a clinician, not a talisman.

Is this the same tape a particular athlete wore?

No. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any athlete, race or organiser. What is the same is the drawing — the shen xing fu is Chinese folk heritage, not anyone’s trademark, and Taoist priests have been brushing it for a very long time.

Can I return it?

Yes. If a roll arrives damaged or the print is wrong, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will replace it or refund you. Rolls that have been opened and used cannot be resold, so we handle those case by case — write to us and we will sort it out.
