A fu (符) is a written Daoist talisman — a document, structured as head, body and
seal, read top to bottom, traditionally brushed in cinnabar on yellow paper. Charms
bound to the legs are called jiama (甲馬). In the novel Water Margin, Dai Zong the
Divine Traveller binds them to his calves, covers five hundred li in a day, and
unties them when he stops. That is where "one effort, then off" comes from.
